My love for making pictures can be traced back to the mid 1980s. I first had a small polaroid that I would take on trips like the one above to Disneyland in 1986. I got even more obsessed with taking pictures when my parents bought me a Vivitar point-and-shoot camera (see photo below) for my 14th birthday. I carried that thing with me everywhere for the next 10+ years.
Even before then, I was always looking through boxes of old photographs I would pull out from my grandparents’ closet. I remember being drawn to the stories each photograph told and how the moment lived on long past the people in them.
In my photography, I’m drawn to movement, mood, light, and shadow. I try to convey how a scene felt to me in the moment. Sometimes, this is a realistic representation. Other times it’s an abstract interpretation. In the end, the images I make reflect my connection to the subject in the moment. My biggest hope is that this connection can be extended to you, the viewer of the photograph.
